Samsung Smart TVs
« on: December 09, 2019, 02:24:34 PM »
We have a Samsung Smart TV a 2014 model. We mostly watch our programmes on the BBC iplayer, but as from today we are unable to get it according to a notice on our screen, the ITV iplayer is unaffected.

My husband is really fed up as he watches a lot of wildlife programmes and documentaries on the BBC iplayer, so it is important it is either fixed pdq, or if it can't be to our satisfaction we will buy a new smart TV, but definitely NOT a Samsung.

Have any other posters got a Samsung Smart TV, and if so have they had problems with it?

I have seen the link, not that I really understand it, far too technical  for me. Fortunately our eldest girl will be able to work out what to do. However, as a busy vicar it won't be anytime soon as Christmas is nearly upon us.  We can watch the BBC iplayer on my laptop but that means lugging it downstairs each time as it is in my bedroom/study, HEY HO. But considering what terrible problems other people have, that is very minor indeed, and I should count myself fortunate.

Thanks NS, but that still looks very complicated to me, I will probably screw it up, and then I would really be in the deep proverbial. :o I will wait for our daughter to explain it all in baby speak to her senile old mum.

My grandchildren would have sorted it out. ;D Anyway our daughter has looked in to it for us, and the long and the sort of it is that we will need to buy a new TV, as ours is past its sell by date where the BBC iplayer is concerned. She is looking into which TV will be best for the ancient relics, but I guess it will be after Christmas before a decision is made.

A laptop is not for "lugging", it is a compact well-specified portable computer which can be used anywhere. No doubt it has a HDMI outlet.

Why not simply connect the laptop to the tv using one of the tv's HDMI inputs. You can then watch iPlayer again. At worst you would have to buy a new HDMI cable.

I haven't a clue what you are talking about, never mind, no doubt everything will be sorted out in the New Year.

You are rejecting a solution to your problem that cost about a fiver and take two minutes to complete.

I don't wish my laptop to be connected to the TV, I require it for my use. Besides which, I doubt it would produce the good sound quality my husband expects and he would reject it anyway.

Why not just buy a new TV?  Look online, you could have it delivered tomorrow.  Problem solved.

Because it's unnecessarily wasteful? Given the BBC link is specifically for adjusting Samsung 2014 Smart TVs, it seems to me that the attempt should be made to follow the instructions even if LR needs to put a sign up in local pub for a tech savvy urchin

Are you really as technologically incompetent as you are making yourself out to be?  Are you allowed to use the remote control or do all those keys and numbers stress you out? If you can use a remote control then you have all the skills necessary for my suggested solution.

When you don't want to use iPlayer you just disconnect the laptop, Sound is produced by the tv not the computer.

New TV - £400  (it has to be unpacked, assembled and installed. Would LR be capable of this?)

HDMI cable - £5

Do they do next-day delivery in the more remote regions of the Principality?

I would agree with you NS but LittleR has said she's been told it can't be done on her telly & she'll have to have a new one. However you say quite different and I think it would be worth trying, your instructions are very simple.

i have a Samsung SmartTV which is about two and a half years old. In this room have a Bush which was bought a few months ago from Argos when the older one conked out. They both do the business, equally good. The Samsung my husband picked up from a Sainsbury's Savacentre, Argos delivered the Bush same evening it was ordered.

Yes, I read that but it's bad policy not to test the easy solution that is better for the environment.

saney,
I agree with you but the immediate environment of Lr's household may be more important in this case

Besides , if she lets me know where she is I'll give her a fiver for the old telly 👍

I agree NS. Im not particularly tech savvy but could follow those instructions.

Hadn't thought of that. Maybe there's a local shop where someone would come out and install? That's if necessary, you're right about the laptop for now.

My daughter would set it up for us, we probably wouldn't buy it on line, as we would wish to see it first before we purchase it. My husband has decided he requires a TV with a better sound quality than the last one, not that I can see anything wrong with it, so would be prepared to pay a lot more that £400 if necessary.

...  My husband has decided he requires a TV with a better sound quality than the last one, ...

Sound quality is the predominant problem with new televisions. Manufacturers have concentrated on picture quality (4K screens are available for little more than the cost of 1080p sets now) and the fashion is for tv receivers with new technology screens to be extremely thin. Unfortunately, thin-bodied receivers do not have the internal volume necessary for high quality sound reproduction and some are sold with an additional sound bar as a package deal. Some sound bars are able to make a reasonable attempt at delivering 5.1 surround sound.

Which? regularly provides assessments of currently-marketed tv receivers. The cheaper models sold by High Street dealers (Argos, Currys, Tesco, Sainsburys etc) are frequently reported as having poor sound. Which? almost always recommends models from LG or Samsung with Sony and Panasonic as further choices.

Has she tried doing the software update? If your TV is connected to the Internet, which I guess it must be if you used to be able to use iPlayer, the update process is really simple and has only four steps.

https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/tv-audio-video/how-do-i-update-the-software-on-my-samsung-smart-tv/

Get that done and then we can talk about updating the iPlayer app.
