Selling Scotland

Just caught up with this. It's actually very good. I do think that  the national anthem should be switched to Caledonia.

What was wrong with "Scotland the Brave", which was considered the Scottish national anthem when I were a lad, and is a jolly, catchy tune, unlike the current dreary, depressing dirge?
I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.

It's stereotypical rubbish of the 'shortbread tin' variety and to me it smacks of the White Heather Club version of Scotland. As an anthem played/sung at sports events involving Scotland it has been supplanted by 'Flower of Scotland', which is a bit of a dirge and not much of an improvement.

The Frankie Miller version of Caledonia. Which as part of an advert changed my life.

For me that is the definitive version - that he lost his voice as he did was a tragedy.

My favourite Frankie Miller recording - just sublime.

I remember Cliff Hanley, who wrote the words to 'Scotland the Brave' (the official ones, anyway) saying that if they sung them at his funeral, he'd get out of the box and strangle them...he HATED those words with a vengeance - he wouldn't even take royalties for them.
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."
