Definitely very sad. Marvellous the way he maintained a sharp mind and managed the show.

This is very sad news.  It's like the fabric of my life is being unravelled bit by bit. 

Nevertheless, 96 'after a short illness' is a consummation devoutly to be wished.

The first encounter with 'Just a minute was actually listing to it on the World Service, as radio 4 was not supposed to be 'cool' in the early seventies. That was the golden era - Parsons, Williams, Nimmo, Jones and Freud Now that was a combination of incredible serendippity or divine genious , if ever there was one.

Nicholas Parsons and I have a home town in common. His father was a GP and it was claimed (without any confirmation) that he delivered Margaret Hilda Roberts into the world. The room in which it is supposed she was born is now a massage parlour  -  in an alternative health clinic.

I remember this line up very well.  A golden era indeed!  I used to listen to it in my bedroom while my parents and the rest of the family were downstairs watching telly.

Whoever it is, I hope it's not Paul Merton or Giles Brandreth. They've both stood in before but neither really was up to the mark.

Agreed.
The next chairman needs to be a straight man/woman, as a foil for the panel.
Merton and Brandreth are great  panellists ; don't rock the boat.
I've seen suggestions that Richard Osman have a go as chair.
Look, don't shoot the messenger; I didn't make the suggestion.

Stephen Fry would be good, except that he's too unreliable: he took over ISIHAC for a season or two after Humph handed in his dinner-pail, but then dropped out, to be replaced by Jack Dee. It needs someone who'll commit themself to it long-term.
