Probably one of the things which marked him as genuine was the fact that he sacrificed his own party in the struggle to achieve the peace settlement - and knowing full well that this would be the result, he did it nevertheless.

I must admit I don't remember him, but having just seen the the lunchtime news, and all Hume appears to have achieved he seemed like one of the good guys.

The most significant driver for the 'peace' we have in NI. You read the tributes in the summary here from the breadth of people, and they are all genuine.
