The death of Tolstoy
« on: November 22, 2020, 01:48:17 PM »
Remarkable film from 1910 of Tolstoy's wife, soon to be widow, arriving at the stationmaster's house at Astopovo railways station, where Tolstoy lay dying, and not being allowed in to see him. It includes a shot of Tolstoy himself, either dying or already dead, and finishes with a crowd following the removal of his body. I discovered the existence of this film from an article in the latest edition of 'The Oldie'.

I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.
