Wee magic stane on the move.
« on: December 24, 2020, 09:14:29 AM »
Nearly seventy years to the day when the Stone of Destiny was temporarily 'repatriated' from Westminster Abby, where it had lain as stolen goods for centuries, it was announced that it will be removed from Edinburgh Castle to a new site in Perth. Mind you, I'm not sure it IS the stone used to inaugurate Scottish kings. Oh, yes, it's the stone Longshanks stole, but it may well have been simply substituted, as descriptions of the stone show it to be far more elaborate than the lump of sandstone we see today. Possibly, what English kings have been planting their bums on for centuries is actually a cover for a cesspit. How appropriate! https://www.scotsman.com/news/uk-news/stone-destiny-be-moved-perth-its-current-home-edinburgh-castle-3077248
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

I've met the redoubtable Ian Hamilton, and also read his account of the 1950 'repatriation'. In tribute, I offer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKI8wwvY5mA

I remember reading about it in the papers, is there some reason you're trying to get at me by subtly reminding me how old I am, well there there you are, I didn't miss it and I didn't realise how nasty you could be Anchor.

Try telling Ian himself....he was still hale and hearty when I last met him a couple of years back.
I doubt if he could lift the big bit of the 'stane' now, though.
