''Statues to get protection from 'baying mobs'
« on: January 17, 2021, 10:37:14 AM »

Of course, Jenrick is also the minister with responsibility for cladding regulation but he isn't making any progress on that, and gives emergency planning permission to Tory party donors. Corrupt dickhead.

One thing that pisses me off somewhat more than somewhat is right-wing knobs accusing statue-topplers of wanting to erase history. They're doing nothing of the sort - Edward Colston's (for example) deeds will still be known, and statues don't just impartially record history - they celebrate people considered worth celebrating. If we stop thinking that they should be celebrated, we should remove the statue. No-one complained when a statue of Saddam Hussein was famously pulled down in Iraq, and I image there were plenty of statues and busts of Hitler in Germany, that were, quite rightly, removed after 1945.
That's not to say that I approve of all statue-topplings. As Jenrick said about threats to the statue of Churchill in Parliament Square (and I'm not in the habit of quoting Tories approvingly), being a man of his time, he expressed opinions which we would deplore nowadays, but, when all's said and done, his leadership saved Britain and Europe from the vilest regime ever to infest the earth.
I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.

Colston is now way more well known as the toppled statue.
