The vigil was a bit irresponsible, given Covid-19 restrictions, and looks like virtue-signalling, but the police seem to have behaved pretty badly.

I wouldn't call it virtue signalling, people feel they want to do something, standing in some way with the victim & particularly feel for this young woman who was most likely conned into the man's car. To call it a horrific case is an understatement. It's frightening. It's also depressing.

We know not all men are murderers and/or sex offenders, not all women are like Rose West. They are a tiny minority, the majority of people would never in a million years do anything like that or even think of it.

For the record I've never noticed heck-as-like being misogynistic. I can only assume he once said something clumsy on here which has remained unforgiven.

Thank you for that! At least one poster on here assumes that if you don't agree completely with their excruciatingly right-on view of the world, you're a misogynist, homophobe, racist, etc. It ain't necessarily so.

I think the women were foolish to congregate in the way they did last night. They were risking the health and wellbeing of others by doing so. Having said that the police didn't do themselves any favours either.

I would agree with you Robbie that I have not noticed w.i.e being misogynistic. I guess different people have their own ideas of what is racist or misogynistic etc which makes the labels pretty meaningless in my view.

I think turning up to lay flowers was ok and the police did not prevent this. They only stepped in when people started making speeches from the bandstand, which meant the crowd packed in tighter to listen rather than moving on. And the police apparently asked the ladies on the bandstand to stop making speeches and asked people to leave and the ladies on the bandstand refused to leave. The group had issued a statement saying they won't be told what to do. The ladies who were arrested seem to be fine - no major damage done, but then again I don't see what's particularly traumatising about being arrested - lots of men go through it and are released so it doesn't make it any worse if a woman is arrested. Getting arrested got them publicity for their cause so if this was kind of a planned publicity stunt, it seems to have succeeded.

ETA: I share the feelings of the people who turned up to pay their respects and lay flowers. Something more needs to be done to address the problem of law-abiding women not feeling safe from male violence and harassment.
