I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.

I don't see what's funny about it, it must have been frightening for the passengers. Thankfully nobody died.

I find it hard to muster any sympathy for selfish super-rich sybarites.

All I can see in my mind is people frightened. Even rich people are human beings with feelings. If they had all drowned would you have laughed at that?  Don't be resentful, all will encounter problems in life regardless of how much money they have. Just be glad for what you have and your health, I'm content as I am.

No, but they didn't.

There were five crew members on the boat, hardly 'sybarites'.

Well, they got off safely, didn't they? Drop the humourless virtue-signalling!

What a predictable comment. No, I'm not.

There's an article on superyachts in the latest 'The Week': They are not only insanely expensive ti buy, but also to run, with the crews' salaries (and even the lowliest deckhand iis apparently better-paid than me) and maintenance costs. I suspect that, in a way, that's the point: they tell the world that the owner is phenomenally rich and can afford to throw vast sums away.

He may also do a lot of good, many very rich people do and don't advertise it. I see nothing wrong in having a good time and some nice things if you can afford it; we all have different ideas about what constitutes that, I wouldn't want a yacht but if you like seafaring, why not?

Regardless of status, they were fellow human beings on board the boat when it sank and it must have been a horrendous experience. They were rescued fairly quickly however people can drown quickly and even quite good swimmers can panic.

We all know people who earn more than us, so what, being resentful of them is unattractive. We are better off than many, that's just how it is.

Sorry Robbie, but this is rose-tinted thinking. Sure, there are many rich people who have earnt their wealth morally, legally and transparently. No sense in being resentful of them especially if they contribute to the good running or improvement of society.

But .. there are plenty, even the majority, probably, of superyacht owners who have just stolen their money, leaving people impoverished and helpless. The kleptocracy, often aided and abetted by our own government.

It is time to start being aware of what is going on ...

The owner of the boat is reported to be Gennady Ayvazyan who is or was director of the World Coal Association. I don't know if he has done anything wrong or not but that is beside the point. People could have died and five of them were crew, you can't have anything against them. However no matter, nobody did die and it's over.

Of-course, no one is supporting deaths or injury. However it is far from over.

Any Russian oligarch needs the acquisition of their wealth to be fully investigated.

I daresay that will be done. It's surely not only Russians who are phenomenally rich, is everybody investigated who is ? What I don't like is sour grapes

There are corrupt oligarchs, politicians, officials, businessmen/women from every nation ... however those from Russia and Ukraine must be top of the agenda as they brought about the war that is currently causing millions to live in misery.
