Phillip Pullman, His Dust Materials

 I've read though all through all three books and watch all the programs on BBC (still on iPlayer if needs be). The first book is brilliant  and it goes down a bit in two and the third is a bit messianic (IMO).The TV show is a similar role.

Dust gets more important and then I realised there are various dust phrases used in Catholic sessions over Easter.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Pretty much agree. The first book is the best. Having a whole bit in the 3rd book about a species simply to challenge the idea of Intelligent Design, and the death god was like being hit over the head with a wholly unsubtle stick rather than knife.

 I liked the design of the TV series but got bored by it.

I have not read the books and I agree that there does appear to be downward movement in invention as the tv series progresses - but it is still good and involving.

I am looking forward to seeing the final instalment tomorrow (Sunday). As a television production, it has been excellent and it has been a constant pleasure to be entranced by the acting skills of the Anglo-Spanish teenage actress Dafne Keen. I liik forward to seeing her career develop.




I have just learned that there is a sequel called The Book of Dust. Perhaps we can look forward to a tv adaptation.

 I liked the design of the TV series but got bored by it.

Agree about the books, especially about the third and the death of God, which seemed pretty limp-wristed to me. Even Pullman's bugbear C.S. Lewis could do better than that (on occasion, and of course with Lewis it was the other way round)
Pullman has a marvelous imagination, but at times it seems to fail him.
The TV series has some fine special effects, but some of the subtlety  of the Subtle Knife is lost all round.

The first (prequel) book is called The Book of Dust; La Belle Sauvage.

There is a theatre production that's been adapted, but I've no idea if (/ how?) that works.
