IIRC, James May said that is speed went up by 10mph, the fuel used would increase  by 10% as well (possibly on the lines  of logarithmic calculations?).
There are a few roads that people used to speed along that now have average speed  cameras; they're easier to drive now and it doesn't  take me any longer.

There's also lots of stuff that suggests that s speed of around 50 - 60 mph is the most efficient, and pollutes less.
