The Ashes 2023: Stuart Broad in England team for first Test against Australia
England XI for first Ashes Test v Australia: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jonny Bairstow (wicketkeeper), Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, James Anderson.
Their mind seems to be set on 'BazBall' (/ ' Bazballing'?).
I was reading a book called 'Hit against the spin, but I decided to read something else instead. I suspect the book would give an idea on how England are preparing to play.

Surely the amazing thing there is Ali's return because Stokes asked him?

BTW where are the English spinners?

They will be relying on Ali and Root, looking at the team.

Ali who who was called out of international retirement, and the occasional Root? Surely a lost art? Ou sont les Underwoods d'antan?

Leach has been injured. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/jun/04/england-rocked-as-jack-leach-ruled-out-of-ashes-with-stress-fracture-of-back
It could be Eng hoping  they have more seam and swing bowlers than there are in Oz.
(IMO, spinning and fast bowling are better in Australia, they have harder pitches.)

I get Leach is injured - that the next choice is someone who had retired from test cricket is the question.

They must think that spin won't be a huge factor in the first test.

Moeen Ali can also bat.

I'm not privy to the deliberations of the selectors but they probably have a good rationalisation.

My first thoughts looking at the selected eleven is that we have to be concerned about all of the bowling except Ollie Robinson

Joe Root - occasional spinner
Ben Stokes- fitness suspect
Moeen Ali - coming out of retirement and never really convincing as a front line spinner
Stuart Broad - old
Ollie Robinson - no concerns, except maybe injudicious tweeting
James Anderson - old

It's all kicked off at Lord's

Certainly did - and actually good to see some crowd passion and partisanship (even if misplaced) - not those in the long room though as that was way too up close and personal.

Bairstow was an idiot and really only has himself to blame - he was doing it every ball. That said there was one element which hasn't been commented on much but suggests the umpire thought the ball was dead (even if he hadn't actually called over). That was that he was already in the process of handing back Cameron Green's cap to him before Carey threw down the stumps.

In the what has felt interminable qualifying process for the One Day Cricket World Cup, Scotland have put paid to Zimbabwe's chances, one match after doing the same to the West Indies, setting up a match with the Netherlands to decide who goes through with Sri Lanka.

That's absolutely remarkable, although not as remarkable as beating the West Indies. It'll be a bit of a travesty if they fail to qualify now.

After 43 matches going back to August 2019, Scotland lost badly to the Netherlands and go out on run rate.

We need the rain to stop. If Australia get a draw, the Ashes are gone.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could look back in history and find an England side that retained the Ashes in a similarly dismal manner with a drawn series.

Them's the rules.
