PCC, Mayoral and Council elections,, May 2nd 2024
« on: April 23, 2024, 02:55:08 PM »
Hertfordshire has got a PCC election, and I've just completed my postal vote, and will post it when it isn't pissing down. I voted Green. I haven't bothered voting for PCCs before, since I don't think we should have them - they are a Tory gimmick which replaced Police Authorities - but I want to vote against the bastard Tory bastards as much as possible. It's also the first time I've voted by poste - I didn't want to risk my ID - my old fart's bus pass - being rejected, as I've trimmed my beard since the photo was taken. The new requirement for ID at polling stations is a rather desperate attempt by the Tories to fiddle the vote, since it is weighed against young people, who are less likely to vote Tory.  They're also trying to fiddle the mayoral votes - they abolished the former semi- PR system of voting, and went back to FPTP, which also works in their favour, since there are more left-wing parties than right-wing.

Not going to vote for a party that hates women like the Greens.

I disagree with their official policy, but so do many members, and being pro-trans is not the same as hating women.

Their official policy hates women. The portrayal of the Cass Report as far right as the Scottish Greens have done hates women.

Your link backs that up

'Boris Johnson turned away from polling station after forgetting ID' - I wonder if that might have been deliberate.

No idea why he would have done it deliberately, given that requiring ID was his policy!

Because it plays up to his 'lovable buffoon' image, and gets him in the news.

Tories just managed by a whisker to avoid coming third to Reform.
Council results so far:

Council results so far:
Given the pincer movement with dodgy Mark Menzies in the Fylde constituency, it will be a disappointment for them that they didn't manage second.

Perhaps. Or he's just an idiot ... or forgot that the law applies to him just as it does to others, including when it's his own law. It's not as if he's not got a track record of thinking that the laws he, himself, brought in didn't apply to him!!

Indeed, those are possibilities but I'm cynical about Johnson's motivations when on a day nothing to do with him he gets in the news.

Lots of chat about the London mayoral election being closer than expected. This is bad news for the Tories because they could have done better with a better candidate, which would be pretty much anyone, and it means that the attention will switch to how dreadful a candidate Susan Hall was, and how is that really what Sunak wants to support.

Summary of the results. Includes quotes from Johnson's article in the Daily Mail about his ID issues:

"I want to pay a particular tribute to the three villagers who on Thursday rightly turned me away when I appeared in the polling station with nothing to prove my identity except the sleeve of my copy of Prospect magazine, on which my name and address had been printed.

"I showed it to them and they looked very dubious... within minutes I was back with my driving licence and voted Tory."

Hmm...

And in the end a fairly clear win for Labour in London though the Tory candidate was awful.

Could've done without Sadiq saying he was "beyond humbled" - two infuriatingly common verbal tics in two words.

The Tories haven't quite lost the 500 councillors predicted, though it's not far off, But Labour's gains are a bit disappointing, the lost Tory seats being dispersed across all the other parties. No gains for Reform, which is surprising. [Edit] Apparently, they gained six councillors, so I don't know why they're not shown here.

I wonder if anyone will tell Sunak that there is no point in stumbling on for another 5 or 6 months - and if they did whether he would listen anyway.
