Starmer and Badenoch's lunchtime sandwich split
« on: December 13, 2024, 07:11:50 AM »
After the culture wars, the sandwich war...

More seriously on this, I think Badenoch's statement about lunch is crass. It's neither big nor clever to say lunch is for wimps.

I get the impression this is little more than an attention-seeking stunt over trivia.

Can't imagine that any reasonable Tories (and there may still be one or two left) will be greatly impressed by their leader.

Not a huge sandwich fan hitherto, but if Bad-enough hates them, I might eat them more often.
"That bloke over there, out of Ultravox, is really childish."
"Him? Midge Ure?"
"Yes, very."

I'm surprised that she didn't say she liked her steak raw.

I'd missed till now that Sunak had said his favourite meal was sandwiches. Both his and Badenoch's answers seem desperate attempts to be relatable to some.

She really is sh*t. I saw her in action a couple of years ago at a flagship conference organised by her department and the Dept Education. Huge event - CEOs of massive global companies there. Loads of ministers there, but basically it was her and Gillian Keegan's show. She was absolutely awful and she made Keegan look like a political colossus!!

How many unforced errors can she make in just a few lines.

No, lunch breaks aren't for wimps - it is for people who are paid a low hourly wage and do not get paid for their lunch break - you know, like many working class people (thought she'd understand them as she became working class when she worked a couple of shifts at McDonalds).

And sure plenty of us in white collar high paid jobs eat our lunch at our desks. But there are huge numbers of jobs where that is impossible - e.g. if you are on a supermarket checkout, or serving behind a counter, or driving a bus (or serving in McDonalds!!).

And one of the reasons sandwiches are popular for lunch is because it is cheap and easy to make a sandwich at home and to transport it into work without it getting damaged or leaking everywhere. Not everyone has people who 'bring in food for them'.

And FFS - sometimes I get a steak - has anyone ever, in the whole world, got a steak brought in for them to eat at their desk at lunch ... hmm. That comment is so pathetic - I understand it is supposed to be a funny 'raw meat' comment, but she just isn't funny. Boris might have got away with it, Farage perhaps - but Badenoch - never.

All just weird. And trawling a little further - she's said she puts up her decorations on Christmas Day - who the f*ck does that. I know I get grumpy about people putting decorations up way too early (ours will go up this weekend), but Christmas Day :o That's just plain weird.

It also isn't a great retort to say that Starmer doesn't have time to help farmers but has time to talk about what he has for lunch if you were the person talking about lunch and lack of time in the first place.

While stuff like this is trivia , it's the sort of trivia that can have an effect if it makes you look weird.

True - and when most people will have had no idea who she was until recently this is about making an impression with the public - and she isn't making a good one.

Problem for her is that she isn't cutting through - as LOTO you need to cut through and seem relevant - she doesn't. She also seems really bad a politics - school-child error to commit to reversing the farmer's inheritance tax and VAT on private school fees. Just a gift to the government - once these are in force, she will be committing to tax cuts for millionaire farmers and the richest 7% of parents. Hmm - that's going to go down well - the question writes itself:

"So Ms Badenoch, which services are you going to cut and whose taxes are you going to raise to fund your tax cut for millionaire farmers and the richest 7% of parents?"

To oppose if fine (that's what oppositions do) but to commit to reverse in 5 years time is plain dumb.

I'd say she'd be gone in 18 months, but the tories have changed their rules to require a greater % of their MPs to trigger a vote of no confidence.

Don't think there is any danger to her based on current polls unless either Labour start to pull back some of the support they appear to have lost from the polls and by elections, or Reform kick on from where they are. Any attempt to get rid of her even under the old rules would need to have some sort of deeper justification than not being further in the lead in the polls, as opposed to their tiny current lead.

And while stuff like the sandwich wars won',t help, it would be a contributory not a determinant factor in triggering anything. Unless there was some sort of reverse coup for Johnson, I just don't see any Tory being able to get the enthusiasm from others to challenge.

Personally, I doubt it. Years ago there was a question to Gordon Brown (mumswebsite iirc) about his favourite biscuit and he refused to answer.
I suspect these questions  are more to do with attention seeking journalists than MPs. KemiKaze though though ...https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/dec/11/the-tories-are-living-in-an-echo-chamber-with-kemi-badenoch-as-its-mouthpiece

Brown's refusal to answer though is just as weird. It makes the trivia of the biscuits reflect being unable to say what biscuits you like.

Having read the first few paragraphs, it seems to me that Badenoch does eat lunch. In fact, she has a more substantial lunch than most people.

'Yum, yum - a nice piece of steak for lunch at my desk' - as no-one said ever.

But you are correct - it appears she has lunch, that someone else buys for her and brings to her. Which she presumably doesn't pay for herself. Yup, she really gets ordinary people :o

Does anyone need to pretend that it's not clear that she means having a lunch break, as opposed to eating food at lunchtime? It's bad enough without that.
