Why are we born in a particular family?
« on: May 03, 2025, 03:12:19 PM »
Hi everyone,

Here is a secular spiritual explanation for why we have a particular family. Thoughts of the 'Sleeping prophet' Edgar Cayce. Its not about any religion.

Matches my thinking exactly.

Cheers.

Why am I not surprised by your last statement, Sriram?  ;)

You really are a sucker for baseless woo.   ::)

The question is idiotic. You are the person you are because of nature (genes) and nurture (upbringing). The family you're born into has made you, you. There is no evidence that there is anything beyond that. It would be literally impossible for you to be you in another family because you would have had different genes and a different upbringing, so you would be somebody else.

You only get to this foolish nonsense by imagining some sort of pre-existing soul, for which there is exactly no evidence or reasoning.

This guy seems to be a True Believer. He, and others, have found evidence of physical brain activity at the relevant times that explain even the solitary patient from the AWARE studies that seemed to recall actual details from a time when their heart was stopped:

Lifting the Veil on Near-Death Experiences

"In 2023 Borjigin and her colleagues published what they suspect could be a signature of NDEs in the dying brain. The researchers analyzed EEG data from four comatose patients before and after their ventilators were removed. As their brains became deprived of oxygen, two of the dying patients exhibited a paradoxical surge of gamma activity, a type of high-frequency brain wave linked to the formation of memory and the integration of information."

"A 2023 study led by Parnia and detailed in his 2024 book, Lucid Dying, provides further evidence of brain activity after patients’ hearts have stopped. Parnia and his colleagues worked with 25 hospitals in the U.S., the U.K. and Bulgaria to review EEG and brain-oxygen data from 567 people who experienced an in-hospital cardiac arrest. Medical staff managed to collect interpretable EEG data from 53 of these patients. Most showed an electrical flatline during the crisis, but in around 40 percent of those cases, neurological activity consistent with that of conscious brains transiently reemerged—in some instances up to an hour into CPR."

"According to Parnia, this study presents “a coherent, mechanistic explanation” for how and why people have recalled experiences of death."

And yet he's still clinging to his beliefs:

"The purpose of this change, he suggests, is to prepare the person “for a new reality”—the transition from life to death, a condition in which, Parnia believes, consciousness endures."

Not surprisingly:

"Other scientists flatly disagree. “When you have an NDE, you must have a functioning brain to store the memory, and you have to survive with an intact brain so you can retrieve that memory and tell about it,” Kondziella says. “You can’t do that without a functioning brain, so all those arguments that NDEs prove that there’s consciousness outside the brain are simply nonsense.”"

The article also highlights a correlation between people who have NDEs and those who have "REM sleep intrusion", again suggesting a physical, brain based explanation, rather than woo.

What's more, to make this daft question make any sense, you need life before birth, not after death.

I think we can confidently place Cayce in the category 'pseudoscience toting charlatans operating in more credulous times'.

You might also find this of some interest, Sriram:

There is nothing much there....except for the same old contrived and convoluted 'brain did it' explanation. OK....death is a complex process that we don't yet understand. That doesn't however establish that there is no life after death or that the Recalled Experiences of Death are false.

It's not at all contrived. It's what all the evidence tells us.

OK....death is a complex process that we don't yet understand. That doesn't however establish that there is no life after death or that the Recalled Experiences of Death are false.

It's up to people who want to propose life after death to provide evidence that goes against all the evidence we have that brains produce conscious minds.

There is evidence that consciousness uses and needs the brain to interact in the world..... But there is no evidence that the brain produces or creates consciousness.

Drivel. Physical brain damage, or pharmaceuticals, change the conscious mind. There is no hint of any evidence of consciousness without a brain. There is no hint of evidence for any mechanism for consciousness to exist separately.

The conclusion is obvious, and it would take very good evidence to support an entirely unknown process that could support consciousness without a brain. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence", isn't just a rule of thumb, it's based on solid mathematics (Bayes' theorem).

That might work within certain philosophical positions. If you agree that Consciousness is emerged then there are at least two interpretations of this definition of emerged entities .....Any emerged entity is not described by or in the levels of being that have given rise to it.....e.g. Water molecules or even groups of them are not wet and in them no wetness is found.

Perhaps you could explain all this calmly and concisely on another thread.

Which, of course, is what much of the available evidence, including recent evidence, suggests.

Glad we agree on that.

I've never claimed that, so it seems a bit pointless for you to say this.

Incidentally, Parnia, in simply giving his thoughts and conjectures on what happens after death, is relying very much on anecdotal evidence. I assume you are aware(excuse the pun) that both his Aware and Aware 2 studies were rather disappointing and extremely limited in their findings. That is not to take away the appreciation that such studies have been attempted, of course.

Perhaps if you were only able to lift your blinkers and open your mind more, then you just might be able to consider all the alternatives in a much more objective way. Sadly, you seemed wedded to your own narrow viewpoint and tend to blindly reject anything which goes against it.
