Are, other than when they happen over 5 days, surely wrong?

I think the second test against South Africa tells us everything we need to know about how good of an idea it is.

Also, the second test against New Zealand would have been dead before the end of day 3.

Agreed. I suppose that 4 day tests could work but it would need a fundamental change in the playing approach, and one that would seem to be to the detriment of what makes great test cricket great.

Apologies for not being clear, I was meaning that currently a 5 day test match can finish in four or less days and while that's fine, it isn't an argument for restricting the days to 4.
