"Families of Israeli Hostages Urge Nobel Committee to Award Peace Prize to Trump" - I might feel it's too early for this but then i remember Obama

The Nobel Peace Prize lost all credibility when it was awarded to unrepentant former terrorist Menachem Begin, and Werner Von Braun, SS member who designed theV2 rocket for Hitler.

I would have argued perhaps from when Kissinger was awarded it with Le Duc Tho, and Le Duc Thorefused it, as there was still issues with the implemenation of the peace, and it highlighted the lack of commitment from Kissinger and the US? Von Braun never won the Oeace Proze though he had a number of other awards.

I think in this case the interesting thing is that some of the suggestion for awarding Trump the prize from the relatives of the hostages, has been to keep Trumo intetested. Perhaps an even more cynical view is to dangle it in front of him for another year?

The award to Obama, which seemed to be for being a black President of the US, means that any comment from the Dems on this against Trump looks partisan.

Leaving aside the flummery of the prize, I only hope that the negotiations are successful, and that Trump does remain interested in making sure the peace holds.

Was thinking about the Peace Prize and realised I couldn't name you any recent winners, checked, and the last one I could actually name was the Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons which was 2017

Damn and blast - now I've got to admit that Trump did something good.

Yes and no.

Given that the Israeli government has a flexible concept of ceasefire, I wouldn't admit anything yet.

I think it is progress. The peopke dancing in Gaza after the announcement aren't foolish enough to expect that Israel might not behave in full compliance but they have hope for the first time in a long while.

I think there is an attitude from some on the left whete they almost hope this fails as it would appear as a positive for Trump, and I should be clear I am not suggesting that that is your attitude. I am happy to take it even if I think his motives are entirely selfish, and shallow.

I'd agree with all that. I was really referencing the fact that we were more or less at this same point in January and looked what happened then.

I hope it does hold, but the word hope is currently doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Yes, it's hard to see anything like this as ceasefire

I suspect it was never even a fragile ceasefire - probably doomed before it started.

Wonder how the orange moron will rationalise this turn of events.

By blaming Hamas who will have done something monumentally stupid even if that isn't the cause, though it may be the cause. And the hostages are returned so je cam point to that.

The illegal blockade of Gaza and other actions by Israel designed to prevent peace resulted in 7th October. Israel might think that's a price worth paying to prevent a viable Palestinian state. There will probably be another 7th October type attack - it is a human reaction in the circumstances.

Quote from: Zara Sultana MP
The two state solution is a fallacy.
The only just future is one democratic state from the river to the sea, guaranteeing equal rights for everyone who lives there and the right of return for all Palestinians.
If that offends you, maybe ask yourself: why does equality and democracy scare you more than apartheid and racial supremacy?

I agre that the best we can realistically hope for is the two-state solution, but this would be the ideal.

Quite so, but why can't she see that? (That's rhetorical, I'm not expecting you to read her mind!)

And why is she trying to portray people who see that it is realistic as being scared of equality and democracy?
