Pokemon.
CONNECTINOS SPOILER ALERT!

I discovered to day that "pokemon" is a portmanteau word, short for "poketto monsutera", which is Anglo-Japanese for "pocket monsters". I discovered years ago, from 'A Ride In the Neon Sun', josie Dew's account of her tour of Japan by bike, that there are quite a lot of English loan-words in Japanese, their spelling and pronunciation altered to conform to Japanese practise, eg "curejitu cado", credit card.
