Stephen Jay Gould suggested that the apparent explosion  of speciation in the Cambrian was a statistical effect known as a sigmoid curve - a sigmoid fraud, as he wittily called it.

Stephen C Meyer is a well known intelligent design apologist who gives no evidence whatsoever for his pet theories. Indeed, within the scientific community he is generally thought of as no more than a purveyor of pseudoscience. If you really want to expand your knowledge and perhaps your understanding of this interesting area of evolutionary thinking, perhaps you might dive into Stephen Jay Gould's 'The Structure of Evolutionary Theory' or at least find out about why Meyer has so many critics by reading this Wiki article, especially from the part on 'Films and Debates' right through to 'Darwin's Doubt'.
