Title: Films you don't like
Post by: jeremyp on May 26, 2015, 11:53:42 PM
As an antidote to the "Favourite film" thread, name the film or films you don't like.  They don't have to be bad, just ones you don't like, for whatever reason.

I'll go first:  The Phantom Menace and its sequels.  Why?  Well, Ja Ja Binks, of course, but also because they nearly wrecked the franchise.  For an in depth and educational critique, see here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI

Warning for BA:  there is bad language in it.

I've seen some horrendous tripe in my time (although occasionally even a bad film can have something worthwhile about it, some redeeming feature) but I think easily the worst film I've ever seen, the most utterly pointless waste of time ever in the history of cinema, was Lars von Trier's Antichrist.

With a couple of notable exceptions I absolutely cannot bear musicals either.

Mamma Mia - my grand-daughter watches this more often than is good for her, so I can't avoid it: it is excruciating (as are ABBA).

You see now you've mentioned him - Tom Hanks. It's not films I don't like. It's films with Tom Hanks in that I don't like.

Ruins every one. Doesn't ever convince me or get me to suspend disbelief.

Life is like a box of chocolates - unless its a Tom Hanks film and then you know exactly what you are going to get.

Titanic films never succeed. Goebbels hushed up a multi billion mark attempt when he realised it was an allegory about how bad totalitarianism is.
The there was Lew Grade's Raise The Titanic.....Grade said afterwards ''Raise The Titanic? I'd have been better off Lowering The Atlantic.''

Considering that the film had Leonardo Di Caprio in it, the iceberg gave by far the better performance.

I agree with everything ... er .... critical that has been said about Titanic. If Kate Winslett's ... er ... gash is what I think it is, it was one of the redeeming elements of the film.

One film I could never watch again is The Deer Hunter.

I dispute the comments on Star Wars episodes 1-3

Yes, Jar Jar Binks is unforgiveable, almost as bad as the scripts. But... and I am deadly serious now... episode 3 is the 2nd best of all six made so far.

Oh yes... I said it.

I was like you once, but then I watched all 6 films back to back and the definite conclusion was that Empire Strikes Back is by far the best but Revenge of the Sith was better than the others, based on dramatic content, action and pacing.

What was also made abundantly clear is how bad a driector and scriptwriter George Lucas is.

As for my film I don't like - Annie

Horror films are best experienced round at your mate's with the curtains closed and a selection of blokes to make you scream by touching your knee unexpectedly.

Of course the appeal does wear off past the age of fifteen.

Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame - not because it's a bad film in and of itself, but because it so utterly misses pretty much every point of the book. It's a bad adaptation, I suppose, but so bad an adaptation that it deserves to be listed here.

I am Legend

They had a chance to make a genuinely good film, instead of doing that they bolloxed it up and made a film that exemplifies all the worst aspects of Hollywood and makes next to no sense (especially when compared to the book).
