Title: Christmas 2019
Post by: Roses on December 04, 2019, 06:31:28 PM
I put our decorations up on December 1st, which is traditional in our family. All the cards have been posted, and I can put my feet up. We are spending Christmas Day at our eldest girl's vicarage with our DS son, and on Boxing Day all four of us are spending it with our youngest girl and her family. I don't have to do any cooking which suits me very nicely indeed, :) although we provide the dosh for the food.

How are other posters spending their Christmas?

Christmas deco's go up on Christmas Eve and come down before Twelfth Night as is traditional in our family and is the only non vulgar way to do it.

Lunch is being provided by my brother. I normally buy the alcohol.

I take ours down before New Year. I must remember to get my husband and I a very small bottle of wine each for our Christmas Dinner, we only have alcohol on special occasions these days, our son and eldest daughter don't drink at all.

Just wondering, which one of the two of you has to spend the most money?

Best regards, ippy.

Looking forward to 23rd December when my dear old mum-in-law always pops round, as she has done for the past 41 years,  to celebrate Xmas with us.
This year, I am seriously considering, for the first time, actually inviting her to come in and maybe even stay!

Quite - and garish outdoor decos are definitely as vulgar as hell, especially when, as is nearly always the case, they have nothing to do with the nativity.

It will be just an ordinary day.  Last yar I spent Christmas and Boxing Days with a friend/neighbour, but she died in February, suddenly and certainly unexpectedly, even though she was 89.

Well as the whole Christmas thingy is a mish mash of disparate elements including Pagan and Christian tradition one could conclude you are being pharisaical.

Christmas is the celebrsation of the birth of Christ. The clue is in the name. I know he probably wasn't born in December, but it's not meant to fall on the actual date. Good Friday and Pasch Sundsay fall on varying dates, but the crucifixion and resurrection must have happened on two particular dates. It may have acquired some pagan elements, and other religions have major celebrations at about the same time, but that's irrelevant. I do not object to Father Christmas, but he, reindeer, snowmen, etc. should not be the exclusive focus. I also don't object to people having a jolly, boozy good time, at Christmas or any other time, so I'm hardly being pharisasical. Have you teamed up with NS to try to piss me off so much with your adolescent one-liners that I lose my temper again, say something anglo-saxon, and get suspended again? If so, you're wasting your time, as I am not going to.

The reality is that the overlay of Christianity on this mid-winter festival, in the form of 'Christmas', is just one of several relating to astronomical phenomena, in this case the winter solstice.

I don't think it matters greatly whether it is referred to as Christmas, Saturnalia, Sol Invictus, Winterval or my preferred 'insanity season'.

You can celebrate any or all of those, and Hannukah, but they are not synonyms for Christmas, but other celebrations, and "Winterval" was never even a single day: it was invented as a rather witty name for the whole period from Bonfire night to Easter, by Birmingham City Council, to cover all the council's events in that period, but the Mail-reading, Clarkson-loving, UKIP-voting "political correctness gone mad" troglodytes got hold of it, and started saying that it was a new name for Christmas. It wasn't, and B'ham Council organised Christmas events, under thast name, as part of Winterval.

Haven't made any plans, sent any cards or bought any presents yet. I leave everything to the last minute. We celebrate Christmas on the Eve here. We usually go to my cousin's. She and her husband are chefs so we're always guaranteed good food. Otherwise, I will spend Christmas eating and drinking far too much and watching the footie on Boxing Day. And I love watching episodes of The Two Ronnies and Carry On films that are always on over Christmas, and Die Hard.

'Christmas' is just a label though that can be used to indicate the Christian elements of a festival but also the other non-Christian elements that have been added, or both, where the paraphernalia surrounding Santa is the obvious example of the latter. For some 'Christmas' is no doubt rooted in the Christian tradition while, for others, it is all the non-Christian stuff that matters to them: in that sense the term 'Christmas' can now mean whatever anyone wants it to mean to suit their preferences, which may or may not include Christian elements.

Mrs G and I were discussing this last night, and in particular the question of whether if we were on our own and, hypothetically, with nobody else to take into account, would we bother to put up a Christmas tree: she said yes, I said no.

We are normally away over Christmas but having big holiday at end of Feb so will be at home this year. Just my wife, and I, and the orang-utan, and the penguin, watching traditional Christmas films, drinking champagne and fine clarets, eating salmon and cheese and ethereal vol au vents.

I am not very keen on properties, which have OTT external Christmas displays, especially those with flashing lights. Until last year there was a bungalow, which was so over the top one had to have a look see. Even our grandson who was about 5/6 at the time commented that it wasn't very nice.  I presume the property as been sold as the display is no more.

Excellent idea!

I've posted all my Christmas cards, still have to write some which I'm going to give personally to people whom I see and neighbours.

No decs up yet, too early. I'll get round to wrapping presents in due course, husband is good at that. There's one I must do soon because it has to be posted.

My uncle will get a tree for us, my sister and now, I presume, for my eldest daughter as she is married and lives nearby - a small one for him and my aunt too (he has a share in a garden centre), they'll be with us Christmas day.

Vol au vents so light that they have to be tied to the plate else they escape.

Holiday is Hong Kong and Borneo - to see more orang-utans.

Home, three weeks off work, littlest one's first Christmas, the toddler's first Christmas where he gets it, the other two kids are still at home - games, talk, television, excited children, two visits to Santa, one visit to the Gruffalo (?), one visit to each of the in-laws... it's going to be busy, but fun :)

I can't imagine what Christmas will be like when we've no children at home!!!

Celebrating Newton's birthday on the 25, at least he really did exist and arguably his works on Principia Mathematica is far more use to humanity than that other book of mixed superstitions ever was.

its not nice my friend ,
I spent many nights away from home when I worked in the finance industry when my kids were young . It became particularly difficult when I became a single dad .
One consolation though , all my kids have grown up to be wonderful people in their own right and quite successful .

It's 3 years since I was there and the Christmas card from Lando arrived yesterday with a voucher for a half price meal, and a summary of their new wine list - hand written.

Been twice to L'Antipasto, once in the City of London & seem to remember the other was Battersea or thereabouts, a while ago. V gd food and service at both.

Had no room for a Christmas tree in the window due to my Giant Meccano Block Setting Crane, So I have decorated it with fairy lights and tree ornaments.  Looks great and won admiration from the postman!

As we approach the great celebration of our Saviour's birth, I wish you all a happy, joyful Christmas.

So it's a matter of ilimination now by changing one med at a time to detect which one it is .
X-ray came back normal too , also I have a deficiency in vitamin D which can be easily remedied

I once made a Christmas card for a friend on which I drew a bottle of Fairy Liquid, with the caption "Hands that do dishes can be soft as your head". I attached some cotton wool, which I described as "Genuine Hairy Snow".

Where does Father Christmas live?
Edinburgh!
That's where Royal Mail sends all letters from kids to FC or SC, if they've got a fantasy address such as "North Pole" or "Reindeerland", or RM's official FC postcode, XM4 5HQ (XMAS HQ - geddit?), or which have no address, whether or not they've got stamps on. The kid gets a letter from FC back, provided there's a return address. They are dealt with at Edinburgh Mail Centre.
He used to live in Belfast, but has moved to Edinburgh this year.

I think you mean Michael Pollard, but in any case, if you mean he's snuffed it, popped his clogs, kicked the bucket, handed in his dinner-pail, is pushing up daisies, has rung down the curtain, has gorn to join the choir invisibule, is a stiff or a gonner, say so, but spare us twee euphemisns like "passed on" (or even worse, just "passed", as the yanks say).

Thank you Gordon and all the others who've wished us to have a happy Christmas.

I thought I'd check in while I have a bit of time, everything is under control here (at the moment :-).

Fairly low key this year, just me, husband, uncle and aunt and youngest daughter who arrived late last night, for main meal; elder married (& pregnant) daughter is coming 6ish with husband. They were at party last night at his parents and staying for lunch today (we were invited to party but really couldn't manage it this year, we do see them & they came to us a couple of weeks ago for a small gathering). My in laws went to Sussex a couple of days ago to my sister-in-law and her husband and family, their grandson(our oldest nephew) picked them up and drove them down - we miss them but we are going there sometime over next weekend and will spend new year with them, exchanging our Christmas presents, after which we'll bring in laws back. My sister and family came round earlier, they're going to Scotland to his family for Hogmanay.

Would you believe I haven't opened any of my presents yet :-).  We'll eat about 2-2.30pm and I'll devour my gifts after that. I know what some of them are (Charlie's gifts to me which I chose), but it will still be fun opening & there'll be some surprises.

There are sobering thoughts that we all have about the 'festive season'; it's not festive for everyone - I see plenty of hardship in my job - still we mustn't allow such thoughts to spoil things for us. As many say, "It is what it is" & most of us do what we can for others without being patronising.

I've gone on a bit, nobody has to read, but Imay not be back later, I really hope everyone has a happy time. It will soon be over and everything back to 'normal'. Many shops open tomorrow (not Waitrose so I'm told)! I won't be going, can't stand shopping at best of times but useful to know somewhere will be able to sell a pint of milk and bread if anyone needs. Years ago when kids were young I remember buying batteries at a corner shop on Christmas day.

Joyeux Noel to smashing people I've met online on R&E, really enjoy posting here even tho' I don't have all that much to say.

In the beginnin o aa thing, the Wurd was there ense.
The Wurd bade wi God, an the Wurd wis God. He wis wi God i the beginnin; an aa things cam tae be throu Him, and wiout him, no ae thing cam tae be. I hope you all had a good Christmas?

In the light of my upcoming birthday next month, my darling family decided my pressies should have a dinosaur theme this year. According to them I am so very old, when I was born those creatures were still in residence on this planet, LOL!

After the meal on Boxing Day the usual game of 'Tell Me' was played. Nothing has changed since our girls were young kids. Our eldest and youngest were soon accusing each other of cheating, and I was threatening to spank the pair of them if they didn't behave themselves, LOL!

Hope you all had a good time over Christmas! Sounds like we did and I love Anchor's vernacular (he'll prob'ly come back and tell me it's not, it's authentic).

LittleR I like dinosaurs and have dvd of 'Walking with dinosaurs'. Pity we can't adopt a dinosaur instead of a donkey or whale or dog but s'pose we'd have job finding one. I'm 60 in April so may have similar in store which I will love.

Received a couple of things in post today which were meant for Christmas but I don't mind, it' a bonus and those I had bought for others I'll distribute over new year.

Not long been up, had breakf. & will be going in to work 12.30-6pm which I'm not sorry about, looking forward. Doing 10-2 tomorrow but then off until Jan 3rd, we'll be at sister in law's over new year.

Good wishes to all inc happy new year because I don't take laptop with me when I'm away & only have simple phone (unless anyone buys one for me, not expecting that & can't say I want one).

Good health to all!

Much reminded of otherw less fortunate, the man and two children who died in swimming pool in Spain - heartbreaking - a homelesswoman who gave birth on street in Cambs and the measles epidemic in Samoa. I may hear more sad stories at work today & tomorrow. We're so fortunate, dont always realise it.

He'd be quite right to. Scots or Lallans is widely (though not universally, I don't think) recognised as a language in its own right, not merely a dialect of English. The fact that English and Scots are (more or less) mutually intelligible does not disprove that: Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish are also mutually intelligible, but no-one questions that they are three independent languages.

The word 'Bingo was mentioned on the radio yesterday and that brought back a memory. One Christmas when I was around 11 I think, the aunts bought me a new game in a box, called 'Lotto'. When I opened it to get everyone to play it later, they explained how it worked, but I remember thinking what a daft game because you did not have to actually do anything except simply observe to see if the number called was on the Lotto paper you had in front of you.

Yep....O HAve come back.
This is actually a translaton from Koine Greek into 'Classic' Scots by the former professor of New Testament Greek at Glasgow Uni.
To be honest, it can be quite difficult to read - I'm going to use it on Sunday Morning as my text, in the assupmption that the congregation will be too comatose to listen.....
Seriously (!) I've used it before when conducting services, and had a good response: it's made folk go and look at other translations to compare them with the Lorimer.
I'll also use bits of a paraphrase by Jamie Stuart - "The Glasgow Bible" which transliterates passages into Glaswegian Scots.
That goes down a storm as well.
