... following a long illness: http://goo.gl/ldGde1
Pain, or damage, don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man, and give some back. - Al Swearengen, Deadwood.

Brilliant quote on how he would like to be remembered

"As a man who never sold out his people. But if that's too much, then just a good boxer. I won't even mind if you don't mention how pretty I was."

So what.. he seemed to have spent most of his life in a vegetative state. I believe they have a fancy name for it these days!

What is the average age for death in your demographic these days? (and yes I have "googled" it). Are you in that parameter? Are you scared?

Well, I've been waiting all evening for 'The Musketeers' and now more Muhammed Ali...haha.

I'm not exactly complaining, he was a good chappie!

In his day, arguably the most famous man in the world...

.... and certainly the best dancer!

Rest in Peace, Muhammed Ali

Ali wasn't in a 'vegetative state', he could speak, think, move.  He became progressively infirm but never vegetative. In fact he was quite remarkable to have lived as long as he did, forty years after being diagnosed with Parkinsons. Ali was extremely dignified when he appeared at the 2012 Olympics, it was very moving;  of course he looked ill but he was ill, not so ill that he didn't make the effort to come here though.  A 'vegetable' wouldn't have been able to do so.
That was a horrible, unnecessary thing to say.  And, no, I am not afraid of being dead at 74, even by today's standards it's not a bad innings.  Why should any of us be afraid if we are alive and well now when there are many people who die a lot younger.

Mohammed Ali was a wonderful inspiration to so many, may he rest in peace.

When I was younger, a lot younger, I had the priviledge of meeting Henry Cooper at his greengrocery shop in Wembley.

It was shortly after his famous fight with Ali when he actually sat Ali on his backside, and he was talking to several customers about the fight, and about Ali (though I can't remember if he was still Cassius Clay then) and his summation of his opponent was that "he might ffloat like a butterfly and sring like a bee, but he hit like a rocket-propelled garbage truck".

Praise indeed, and from a real gentleman.

Indeed he was and when I saw various boxers paying tribute to Mohammed Ali on TV last night, I thought about Henry Cooper and how he would have had some good words to say.

NS, found your link very interesting.  I well remember Ali refusing to fight in Vietnam, and his reasons.  He was quite right too, in my opinion.

My apologies to Mr Cooper.

He would, as I realised after I had hit the "POST" key, never have used an expression like "garbage truck"! He would, obviously, have said "dust cart"!

Have never been a fan of boxing, but have massive respect for Mohammed Ali for other things he stood for - ie his refusal to fight in Vietnam.  Was discussing this with someone in church this morning - was Henry Cooper the only person to floor him yet still lose the fight?

No, think Sonny Banks did and Chuck Wepner, though the Wepner knock down is a bit dubious

My parents used to talk about the Cooper fight in awed tones even though they weren't boxing fans.
