Ali wasn't in a 'vegetative state', he could speak, think, move. He became progressively infirm but never vegetative. In fact he was quite remarkable to have lived as long as he did, forty years after being diagnosed with Parkinsons. Ali was extremely dignified when he appeared at the 2012 Olympics, it was very moving; of course he looked ill but he was ill, not so ill that he didn't make the effort to come here though. A 'vegetable' wouldn't have been able to do so.
That was a horrible, unnecessary thing to say. And, no, I am not afraid of being dead at 74, even by today's standards it's not a bad innings. Why should any of us be afraid if we are alive and well now when there are many people who die a lot younger.
Mohammed Ali was a wonderful inspiration to so many, may he rest in peace.
