Kites and the flying of them.
« on: April 23, 2017, 03:28:21 PM »
Huge kites as flown on beaches and the like are potentially dangerous.
I noticed some careless flying at Camber Sands which statistically must be one of the most lethal places in England.
Any views on leisure activities which are hazardous to bystanders.

Large kites can certainly be dangerous in the hands of young kids. When I was about five, my two crazy young uncles made a huge kite, which they flew in one of our fields. I wanted a go, and I went up a few feet up in the air. They bribed me with sweets not to tell my mother, who would have had their guts for garters!

Talking of Camber Sands, that beach is etched in my memory! We lived in Kent in the late 70s when our children were small, and visited Camber Sands on a daytrip. My husband had taken our eldest off to buy ice creams and as I was changing our baby girl's nappy on the beach, our middle daughter (3) wandered off. We couldn't find her and had to call the police. Two very long hours later she was found happily playing in a rock pool a long distance away! :o

Is it? Can you point me to a citation for those statistics?

My brief Googling only turns up one recent death from kite flying in the UK and that was in 2011 (not at Camber sands).

Obviously, they need to be regulated, but let's be sure there is a danger before sucking the joy out of an activity.

Certainly
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-37182791 5 deaths in August 2016
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-36881261 1 death 2 critically injured July 2016

Unbelievably Rother District Council hummed and hahed over Lifeguards for Camber Sands
amazingly this, after 6 deaths in 2016 is their response:

What the fuck have they got to do with kite flying?

Or is the kite flying you in the sense of trolling the forum?

Is this thread about kite flying (as per the title) or is it about people drowning?

But it should have been obvious to even the dumbest stupid idiot that the context was deaths from flying kites. What have deaths by drowning got to do with kite flying?

He set a trap to make himself look like a complete spanner? Why?
