...believe it or not, was not one of Ken Dodd's comic creations, but a real person - an early 20th-Century composer.

My parents were friendly with a man and his wife by the name of Oliphant when I was a kid, they are long dead.

I believe that Ken Dodd kept the musical connection in his own creation. 'Raphael Chuckabutty' was, according to Doddy,  a renowned operatic tenor. It was a nickname I gave myself for a while.

He had excellent names, Soorjo and Langobard. Wow, who'd have thought of them?
Wilson Oliphant for short.

Also a sausage-knotter. Maybe Doddy heard of Oliphant and thought the name was humorous, so pinched it. My guess is that it's one of the variant forms of Chakrabati, which is a fairly common Indian surname.

Did 'oliphants' not make an appearance in Lord of the Rings (as kind of hyper-elephants)?

A bit off topic, as amusing as Ken Dodd was on stage, in real life he was a very private person. He was brilliant with our Down's Syndrome son when we met him when the lad was eight. :)

Very good memory to have LR. By all accounts, he was a great man as well as a tireless entertainer. No=one ever has bad word to say about him.

I'd forgotten about the tax business. Who cares? He probably paid a fortune in tax, can't blame him for not wanting to pay more - if indeed he did evade. IIrc, he was cleared.

Yes - he was acquitted. There was some running gag about accountants being comedians but comedians are never accountants. The whole thing did not stop him from getting a knighthood.

Because obviously you sat in the courtroom and heard all of the evidence and made your decision based on that evidence.

Now I'm not saying the judicial system gets it right all the time, but on a percentage basis it works a damn sight better than "imo"

My recollection was nothing like this. I think you are fantasising.

If I recall correctly, he was considered to be rather foolish in the way he dealt with money and his finances but HMRC (or whatever it was then) was shown to be heavy handed - even vindictive - in the way that it had behaved.
