"Abortions carried out when the foetus is malformed, which accounted for 98% of legal terminations last year, have now been outlawed."

That particularly shocked me.

I don't think the ban will last, frankly. Far too much opposition.

Don't bet on it!

This is a country where the ruling party is, apparently, supported by and closely allied to, the Catholic Church.

It would appear not

What now? I feel very unhappy about the probable Government response to another women's protest like the last one. Violent in all probabilty!

It's definitely a worry but it would look awful and Poland isn't a dictatorship, and is in the EU which should make it harder - perhaps a forlorn hope but still a hope.

A pseudo-democracy run, effectively, by the Roman Catholic church!

It really isn't. It's just as with many countries swung to the right which in its case has a lot of Catholic older voters. Back in the 90s, Poland was making huge strides in being progressive. As with many cases of right wing success, a lot of it is achieved by unscrupulous politicians donning the mantle of whatever religion works in that country - e.g Trump.

I should have guessed on this Forum the fault would be with right-wing politicians. Absolutely no surprise there whatsoever!

Given that they're the common factor, it's a better argument. Also in some cases, perhaps many, I have doubts that politicians who do this have much ideology at all, rather they want power and will adopt whatever strategy works to get it.

We're also not talking mainstream right wing here.

Yes, and that doesn't say right wing. As I covered I think many of them just see it as a means to power. That said, right wing politics such as in the US, or Poland, or Brazil, or here is where you generally find strong opposition to abortion. In most instances, that has a religious element but it's not really the churches doing the controlling but people who are individually members of the traditionalist parts of churches, and those who use that to gain power.
