Poor brave man. :o The idiots he went to rescue were let off far too lightly, imo. I am glad the appeal raised quite a lot of money, but it won't give him back what he has lost. :(

Thank you for posting. One can only hope that the two irresp[onsible campers will spend some of their spare time over the next few years doing all they can to help not only the badly injured volunteer but in raising money for the rescue service and, even better, train to become rescuers themselves.

I agree with LR.
I know a friend in the Glencoe MR team, and the times he's had to rescue cretins who wore shorts and trainer whilst climbing Annach Mhor or Bidian and were surprised when they ended up with broken legs ot worse, doesn't bear thinking about.

The campers broke lockdown restrictions. As far as we know, they were fully equipped for camping. One of them suffered chest pains, which could happen any time any where. They got fined £200 for breaking lockdown (but they were in the wilds of Cumbria, a long wat from anyone else, so not in the same league as going to an illegal rave). What happened was a tragic accident. If it had happened two years ago, before Covid-19 and lockdown, they would presumably not have been fined at all. Let's consider the reported facts, instead of coming over all censorious.

And in rescuing them breaking the law some poor volunteer is screwed for the rest of their life but you think that is worth mocking people on

I think the rescue team were brave and professional.

The accident could have happened at any time, and at any other time no one would point at the people needing assistance,  unless they were totally unprepared.

Imagine the same situation were the group were there not during lockdown.

My point is that it was not the group that caused the accident.

Because they were a long way from anyone else, and outdoors, and not mingling with hundreds of others indoors; and, as BR says, their only misdeed, as far as we know, was breaking lockdown: they may have been (and probably were, or the muckraking British press would have told us) experienced mountaineers and campers. The accident was not connected to their illegal action.

And if I hadn't been cycling from Litchborough to Northampton in March 2014, I wouldn't have been knocked off my bike and spent nine weeks in hospital, costing the NHS many thousands of pounds. Should I be fined as well?
