Quite brave to say this.

I suspect she may end up as quite a tricky question in the sports round of your local pub quiz in twenty years time.

I think it's always going to be an easy question. Her win was quite extraordinary.

And yet, as she covers, it hasn't made it easy. I've seen a lot of abuse of her online, and I think that's something that has made it harder for young sports professionals. Osaka keeps playing on my mind

Given her continual issues with injuries I think it is entirely possible that she may have to bow out of professional tennis in the relatively near future.

And while her win was quite extraordinary, if she simply disappears from the sport even extraordinary achievements become easily forgotten as the person loses any kind of ongoing profile. That's why I said a pub quiz in 20 years time - by then, if her entire career is 'US open', endless injury, retirement she could very easily be completely forgotten - particularly outside the UK (where her achievement isn't just first qualifier to win a Grand Slam tournament, but the first UK woman for nearly ever).

You often go to pub quizzes outside the UK?

They exist, of course.

Pub Quiz question - which golfer in the past 20 years won one of the four Majors tournaments without ever winning another title on either PGA tour or European tour before or since. No googling please. As this achievement is on a par with Raducanu then surely you'll know who it is instantly.

Who said they didn't? Indeed my question implies that they do.

The point is I think Raducanu is a young woman, you see her as a quiz answer.

No idea as to the answer. So what? Does that make Raducanu's achievement any less? Does it make what she has gone through any less?

Of course she is a young woman - what a pointless comment. The issue regarding a quiz question is that unless she overcomes her ongoing injuries her career may well be incredibly short involving a single astonishing achievement, with nothing before or since. Pub quizzes love one hit wonders. She runs the risk of being a startlingly one hit wonder ... err, like Shaun Micheel (yup, I'd never heard of him either - yet he won the golf PGA championship in 2003 without ever winning another PGA nor European title before or since).

No idea as to the answer.
See above.

So what?
Interesting whether when I mentioned Shaun Micheel whether you went 'doh, of course, yup I remember his incredible achievement' - or maybe like me went 'nope, never heard of him'.

Does that make Raducanu's achievement any less?
No more nor less than a range of other sports people who rose without trace, won something huge, then disappeared again (noting this is speculation that Raducanu is unable to restart her career due to the ongoing injuries).

Does it make what she has gone through any less?
I think a lot of young professional sports people get a lot of grief these days and probably worse than in the past due to social media. However I think the issues most likely to curtail Radacanu's career are physical injuries.

And yet at this stage you have chosen to think of her as a quiz question rather than a person.

It is a comment on how her career could easily pan out, I would have thought that was obvious. It may not do, but my comment was clearly indicating that there is significant likelihood that her career will never really get off the ground again. And if this is the case she will end up as a classic 'one hit wonder'.

Looks as if you are doing that thing you often do NS - arguing for arguing's sake.

It was a comment that reduced her issues to being a quiz answer. I am happy to admit I am argumentive. Pity that you think that it's bad. Particularly because you are indulging in self flagellation.

No it was a comment that speculated that if her injury issues do not improve then her career could well be over almost before it has begun. And as a completely unexpected US Open winner, from out of the blue, that would make her career exactly the sort of thing that a person devising pub quiz questions in 2043 would love.

And what exactly would those 'issues' be NS - my comments are entirely related to the effect her 'injuries' have had on her developing career post-her US open victory.

If that's what you mean by 'issues', why not call them injuries.

Seems a bit odd given that the link to her comments obviously showed a young women worried about herself.

You are just showing your lack of empathy about her concerns.
