Given Theresa May will be new PM this week, one wonders what the make up of the cabinet will be. One suspects that there will be, and has to be for brexiteers, though possibly not Boris.
Leadsom Chancellor?
Gove Home Sec or Foreign Sec
Fox - Health or Defence
And you have to reward your own closest supporters so possibly Grayling for Home Sec?
-
Different take on it from John Rentoul

Wow, tons of people bellowing in my ear that May is tacking left, stealing Labour policies, we can live with her, and so on. Eh? I think this is naive.
-
I wonder if Leadsom was promised a decent job to opt out. If so her performance over the last few days is a worry.

very.

I sincerely hope not, she seems like a loose cannon, who would do more harm than good.
-
I think one pressure on her is that she only has a 12 seat majority so the Brexiters can threaten to vote down any Brexit light ideas she may come up with. So I'm hoping for a full on Brexit agenda.

So I'm hoping for a full on Brexit agenda.
SAo, what does a 'full Brexit agenda' look like, JK? Andrea Leadsom, Michael Gove and Boris seemed to have problems outlining one.
-
I wonder if Leadsom was promised a decent job to opt out. If so her performance over the last few days is a worry.
I suspect that it was as much a realisation that she wasn't going to get the support from what she felt were her natural constituency - the women in the party.
-
What are Brexit light ideas?
EEA and all that shit!!!
-

Where we are trading with the world as others do like India and Australia etc., i.e. not part of the Single Market's political project.

TERESA MAY BECOMES PRIME MINISTER WITH A HUGE...........................................

Another wonder of Brexit.

EEA and all that shit!!!
which some of the Brexiteers in the Tory party support. Which means you cannot assume them to be homogeneous, same as with Leave voters.
-
Where we are trading with the world as others do like India and Australia etc., i.e. not part of the Single Market's political project.
Do you know that places 'like India and Australia' want to trade with us? After all, following the UK's accession to the EU back in the 70s, Australia radically refocussed its priorities towards its own neighbours - Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.
-
I think one pressure on her is that she only has a 12 seat majority so the Brexiters can threaten to vote down any Brexit light ideas she may come up with. So I'm hoping for a full on Brexit agenda.
But when Brexit is seen as toxic that majority will go anyway. Why dya think Leadsom followed Farage, Gove and Johnson?
-

Most of the House is against Brexit. She might lose the support of some of her MPs, but she will gain support from elsewhere.
-

We already trade with India and Australia. This is more about how we trade (or not) with out biggest trading partner.
-
which some of the Brexiteers in the Tory party support. Which means you cannot assume them to be homogeneous, same as with Leave voters.
I was just explaining what was meant by the term Brexit light.
-
I was just explaining what was meant by the term Brexit light.
There is no such thing as Brexit light - we are either a member state of the EU or we aren't. Any settlement in which we are no longer a member of the EU is Brexit and is clearly complying with the result of the referendum that only asked whether or not we should be a member of the EU - no other question was asked.
-
Do you know that places 'like India and Australia' want to trade with us? After all, following the UK's accession to the EU back in the 70s, Australia radically refocussed its priorities towards its own neighbours - Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.
People are always looking for more trade, so their eggs aren't all in one basket.
-
But when Brexit is seen as toxic that majority will go anyway. Why dya think Leadsom followed Farage, Gove and Johnson?
But Brexit isn't toxic, except seen by the hysterically naïve.
Farage was never in the Tory government, Boris got stabbed by Gove and Gove was seen as a risk to the PM-ship, and Leadsom was a wee lass who looked over the parapet into the real world and wet her pants.
-
Most of the House is against Brexit. She might lose the support of some of her MPs, but she will gain support from elsewhere.
And you think that will look like a strong PM-ship and government? And what about the mandate from 17 million people to leave the EU? They won't be too chuffed of parliament going against their will.
-
And you think that will look like a strong PM-ship and government? And what about the mandate from 17 million people to leave the EU? They won't be too chuffed of parliament going against their will.
I thought those 17 million were all in favour of the UK parliament being sovereign - clearly not.
-
We already trade with India and Australia. This is more about how we trade (or not) with out biggest trading partner.
Well no it's not. It is about uncoupling ourselves from an insane political project which is falling apart fast.
-
I thought those 17 million were all in favour of the UK parliament being sovereign - clearly not.
You beat me to it, Prof. ;)
-

Any settlement in which we are no longer a member of the EU is Brexit and is clearly complying with the result of the referendum that only asked whether or not we should be a member of the EU - no other question was asked.
The question was neither here nor there. What matters was what was talked about and asked for in the campaign and what came through was "control"; of immigration, of our borders, of our democracy and to be free from the undemocratic interference from Brussels. EEA and all that doesn't give us that so that should be off the table. How our political elites play this is another matter.
-
I thought those 17 million were all in favour of the UK parliament being sovereign - clearly not.
What do you mean by sovereign?
-
Interesting take on the topic on the BBC site - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-36776410
-
What do you mean by sovereign?
That the UK parliament is able to make its own decisions and is not forced to adopt a specific position unless it choses so to do. Effectively that its hands aren't tied, unless it choses for its hands to be tied.
So had parliament chosen to make the referendum binding (which it could have done) then it would have tied its own hands. However having very clearly made the decision that the referendum is advisory is would be anathema to the notion of parliament being sovereign to imply that parliament must be bound by the referendum result.
-
But Brexit isn't toxic.
Have you not seen any of the reports of increased racial abuse?
Have you not seen the predictions of economic turn down that will result in many people losing their livelihoods?
Have you not seen how Scotland is desperately trying to break up the UK so they don't go down with the sinking ship that is England?
Brexit is toxic. No question at all.
Farage was never in the Tory government, Boris got stabbed by Gove and Gove was seen as a risk to the PM-ship, and Leadsom was a wee lass who looked over the parapet into the real world and wet her pants.
So all the Brexiters ran away like the cowards they are.
-
It is about uncoupling ourselves from an insane political project which is falling apart fast.
Unfortunately, Brexit looks inevitable. We are committed to it even though it is an insane political project and is already falling apart (all its leaders have deserted like rats).
-

But the term sovereign applies to more than just that though which is what we were talking about - the broader application.

The police say that this always happens when some national or international event triggers these type of feelings. They'll calm down soon.
Nothing is wrong (or right) about the economy etc. It (the world economy etc.) was and is pretty fucked up - you can't blame the snow flake that starts the avalanche; the mass of snow was unstable before it landed.
Oh the wee wheengeing Scoots. They are like little children running around screaming and shouting and achieving nothing. When they see what independence means they'll sit down and be quiet.
So all the Brexiters ran away like the cowards they are.
The only real coward was Cameron who did nothing in planning ahead for a Brexit vote and then ran off once the vote came in.
-

Italy's banks are in need of a bailout. If they go bang so does the Euro and the EU.
Deutsche bank has failed the stress test in the last two years and the IMF are saying that they are so bad that they could fail and cause a massive global crash.

Boris as Foreign Secretary, ffs
-
Hee hee, aaargh!.
I wonder if Theresa May whispered in his ear that she would have a first rate job lined up for him in the Cabinet if he dropped out of the leadership race, which I believe he was very glad to do.
Wouldn't surprise me.
-
Certainly feels like it. 'Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?'
-
Boris as Foreign Secretary, ffs
Why? He has got to be part of the Brexit process if it is to have any validity. She can always ditch him once the process is over!!
-

Because he has no principles. See his statements prior to the campaign and during it.

Fucking Boris Johnson?!
I mean, that's a hideous image at the best of times, but when he's just been made Foreign Secretary.
-
Boris as Foreign Secretary, ffs
I think it is a good move on her part.
I'm surprised she hasn't also appointed Andrea Leadsom and Michael Gove in other roles.
( just noticed Liam Fox is Secretary of State for International Trade )
Boris as foreign secretary is a stroke of genius, IMO
🌹

Secretary of State for Exiting the EU. What a mouthful!!
Will David Davies be responsible solely for the process of extricating the UK from the EU, or will his remit be wider and include looking at ways to ensure that the important aspects oif EU legislation that we have signed up to - for instance legislation on the environment, on equality, on diversity, on human rights, ... are properly enshrined in the UK's legislative code?

I think he will have a wider remit and his job is probably to brainstorm possible ideas. It frees up the others to concentrate on their own roles.
He will probably present them with a series of possibilities.
Someone will shorten the title, to "SS for EE" perhaps. Or even " The man from Ssee" :D

Could it become confused with the term SSSE's; or (S)SOE ;) Apparently, and I haven't actually checked this, there are some interesting acronyms doing the rounds of Twitter, already.

Are you mad? Boris will have to spend 2 years apologising to all the people he's insulted. The man is a dangerous baffoon. And you think it's a stroke of genius.
I suppose it is if you are deliberately trying to make the UK a laughing stock. In which case Theresa's doing a grand job.
As for Theresa positioning herself as a the ordinary people's champion - let me see how many Conservative PM's I can remember doing that. Thatcher (tick), Major (Tick), Cameron (tick). Oh Plus ça change....
-
The police say that this always happens when some national or international event triggers these type of feelings. They'll calm down soon.
The damage is already done. A lot of people have been hurt by this and a lot of foreigners' perception of this country is that England is full of nasty small minded racists.
Nothing is wrong (or right) about the economy etc. It (the world economy etc.) was and is pretty fucked up - you can't blame the snow flake that starts the avalanche; the mass of snow was unstable before it landed.
Our economy was not fucked up. In fact it was doing quite well until you came along with your stupid racist vote.
Oh the wee wheengeing Scoots. They are like little children running around screaming and shouting and achieving nothing. When they see what independence means they'll sit down and be quiet.
I expect them to achieve independence in ten years. Yu have done this. You have destroyed this country.
The only real coward was Cameron who did nothing in planning ahead for a Brexit vote and then ran off once the vote came in.
And the euro-leech Farage and Johnson who also both ran away.
Actually, I think, regardless of his stupidity in calling the referendum at all, Cameron has behaved pretty well post-Brexit vote. He didn't run away, he waited until a new PM had been chosen before leaving office.
-
Why? He has got to be part of the Brexit process if it is to have any validity. She can always ditch him once the process is over!!
It's something like appointing Tony Blair as Middle East Peace Envoy.

They already are. All EU legislation is made real only by enacting it in member states' parliaments. Leaving the EU does not mean all EU law is automatically repealed.

Dear Joan,
So we have de Pefeffel and Mr Davis heading up the Brexit negotiating, yes? both Brexiteers, so it is simply a case, you broke it, you can fix it, is that right?
Gonnagle.
-
Dearie Me,
Sorry, this guy will also be in the mix in negotiating Brexit.
Secretary of State for International Trade - Liam Fox
Another Brexiteer.
So de Pfeffel, Davy and Liam, funny but ain't it usually four Horsemen ::)
Gonnagle.

Justine Greening the new Secretary of State for Education is the first openly gay Cabinet Minister, it is good to have a gay person in such an important role, imo.

Why??

Never heard of him?
-
I've heard of him and if he's the right person for the job, all well and good. I don't know him that well so we'll see. His gayness is neither here nor there.
(Angela Eagle is gay if anyone doesn't know. I don't think she is the right person for the job she is up for, nothing to do with her gayness.)
If these people don't work out, she'll have a reshuffle.
Still convinced she offered Boris the job on condition that he backed her in the leadership race which is why he 'withdrew' so easily - and happily.
-

Yes, it reminded me of Thatcher's immortal quotation from St Francis - where there is discord, may there be harmony. Well, she could have been a stand-up with lines like that.
-
Never heard of him?
Chris Smith was a minister in the Labour years under Blair.
Brownie, he's not up for a post now. That is Justine Greening.
Floo you are quite wrong - if I was Education Secretary I'd have all the children being put up chimneys and sent down mines. and I'd confiscate their smartphones and make them play out in the middle of a busy street. Oh and I'd bring back sweets with enormous quatities of unhealthy chemicals in them so that they keep their parents up all night. My sexuality wouldn't make me a good Education Secretary - I fully accept that, indeed I embrace it! :P
-
Dear Floo,
On second thoughts, yes you are right, having the ability to match curtains and cushions is very useful in Education.
Who me!! stereotyping, never!
Gonnagle.

I know! I thought floo was talking about Justine Greening when she said, "Never heard of him?", asking you if you'd never heard of him. What I said about being up to the job and sexuality irrelevant was about Greening.
-
Except Justine Greening is a she so that would make no sense.

I said I had never heard of Chris Smith.
I see Leadsom is Secretary of State for Environment.
-

Error in typing on my part, not gender confusion (must be the Yorkshire accent). It was floo who asked if Trent had ever heard of him, or rather suggested he had never heard of him. She probably meant "her" though, as she had heard of him. I mean her.
No, just seen her post and she was talking about Chris Smith. So why the question mark?
Never mind, we all know Chris Smith is not Christine.
-
I said I had never heard of Chris Smith.
I see Leadsom is Secretary of State for Environment.
Seems to be just another random appointment. Does she know anything about farming, climate change etc..?
Maybe it is all OK ... energy/climate change dept has been abolished and when the farmers come looking for replacements for EU handouts - she should have lots of money left over from the £350m p/w.
-
Leadsom should be OK at Environment; after all, she has children.

May has covered her ass by allowing the Brexiteers to do the deed. So if they mess up they get the abuse because they wanted Brexit and she didn't. If she doesn't touch it then she won't get tainted by it.
-
The list of appointments on BBC website (see jeremy's post #57 for link) seems to show a predominance of Remainers, but Leavers in 'leave'/EU-related posts.
Except many of the remainers weren't exactly that keen. I gather Phil Hammond, the new Chancellor, said in 2011 he would vote leave in a referendum. And of course May wasn't exactly that vocal about staying in.
-

Anyway, we are now well on our way to becoming a backwater. Once Scotland buggers off, the process will be complete.
Oh, actually we are doing fairly well in the present economic climate and the Euro is falling apart.
Again, what planet are you on?
-
So the stock market is down?
Looking at the stock market (and in particular the FTSE100) gives a very misleading position.
Many of the companies in the FTSE100 are traded in dollars as they are major multinationals, but the share price is indicated in the index in pounds. Hence if the pound drops against the dollar the shares become more expensive in pounds, although they actually haven't changed in values. Therefore there is a nominal appearance that the share price has increase, but it is merely because the value of the puns has decreased. I gather when you factor that in (so looking at dollar pricing) then the FTSE100 is down by 10%-ish since brexit.
-
Better to look at at FTSE250 which is more reflective of UK business. But it has recovered reasonably well from the fall on the 24th - mainly I think thanks to May's quick appointment and expectation of a stable government restored.
-
Except they haven't.
Indeed just about every one of their predictions is already beginning to materialise. So just today we've seen a surge in inflation, largely due to the crash in sterling. Plus also growth forecasts slashed yet again.
No one denied that the change over would be a little bumpy, but I see it is only the babies who are crying. But the massive collapse that your lot said would happen hasn't happened.

Scotland can be part of the biggest trade bloc in the World or it can be part of xenophobic Great Britain. They will choose the former.
No. We're got a bumpy ride but if they leave the Union they will hit the bottom of the cesspool.
The EU is stagnating, it too is gradually sinking to the bottom of the cesspool. The Euro is like a dead albatross around their necks.

Proof required.
Drop in value of sterling; the drop on the Stock Markets, both here at home and around the world; the political fallout; the economic fallout and indications that we will be appraoching recession (even if we manage to miss it by fractions, for several years. Need anything else?
They predicted collapse and WWIII and all that. Are you really saying that everything has crashed and burned?
In fact, the Remain camp predicted that the currency would fall in value; that we would fall towards recession; that the global econoy would be hit; that stocks would fall.

Front page of the Telegraph : BoE can't see any turn down in the UK's economy etc. All those predictions of a total collapse of the UK by those lying, fear project Remainers has not come true. Steady as she goes, though admittedly the waters are a bit choppy.

The difference being that the Euro is a fact of life for the EU whereas the rUK is only a consequential pipe dream for the Scots' wet dream that will never be - if they have any sense.

Jack, newspapers and magazines have been fairly full of reports on how the Leave vote will effect both the UK's and the global economy.
Here are a few.

You will notice that none of these are the populist red-tops; they are either serious magazine and newspaper articles, or business analyses.
As for the BoE, it has never said that there isn't a down-turn. It was expected to lower the interest rate earlier this month but decided not too because of the already unstable nature of sterling and the UK economy.

if they have any sense.
If only you and seventeen million like you had had any sense.

I'm aware that this has been linked to on a different thread, but I believe it is pertinent here, as well.

Something that made me laugh today:
They found Teresa May's notes on selecting a new cabinet. Apparently, next to Boris's name she wrote "F Off" but it was tragically misinterpreted.

And I never said that the waters wouldn't get choppy, but one sign of a little wave and everyone is running for the lifeboats.

You crashed the ship.
