It was madness indeed: yes it was unfortunate a relatively young person with children died, and no doubt there have always been such family tragedies and there always will be, but the overblown public hysteria of 20 years ago was disproportionate, ridiculous and embarrassing - at least Private Eye provided a balanced report at the time.

The hysteria still continues though, as is confirmed by the hyperbolic stuff in the media today, which is also disproportionate, ridiculous and embarrassing.

I never liked Diana, and was gobsmacked over the hysteria her death created. If that appalling waste of money spent on all those flowers had been donated to charity it would have been much more worthwhile.

MEGA, MEGA YUCK!  ::)
We can always rely on Floo for an intelligent, moderate, considered post befitting one of her age and experience.
I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.

Diana was an empty-headed waste of space.

Far from it. She was - at that particular moment in history - largely alone (that's to say the first major public figure) to demonstrate that people suffering (in those days dying) from AIDS weren't contagious lepers, contrary to much of the ignorant and fearful-going-on-histrionic rhetoric of the time.

There's no doubt the lady was instumental in breaking the taboo regarding AIDS patients - and, convinced republican that I am, I honour her for that.
However she used her perceived vulnerability as a weapon in the war with the Windsors - and was quick, both to condemn the press when it intruded - but use it as an effective tool in her 'battle'.
A complex person, she deserves a balanced verdict from history.
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

I'd have to concede that she does deserve some credit for that.

Without going into details, my thoughts about Diana are not just a gut reaction, but based on some information I have.

Whatever Diana was as a person, it is the over-emotional and, to me, rather false attitude of people and the media today that comes across as rather shallow. It puts the focus on people who want the focus to be on them.

So, despite unnecessarily attacking Floo for her posting style, you are now trying to copy her. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
